Speaker: Jack Drescher, MD; Jack Pula, MD; Sean Rivera, MD

Description:

Today, it is possible for mental health professionals and patients to openly present themselves as gay or gender-nonconforming. However, recent court decisions and legislative actions opposing gender-affirming care have created an atmosphere in which transgender and nonbinary individuals are both stigmatized and rendered invisible. This panel seeks to provide insight into the experience of transgender psychoanalysts today as the panelists will speak about how these experiences have influenced their practices. Drs. Pula and Riveera will provide their background experiences in navigating multiple types of educational and professional spaces and challenges, including the impact of transition and career on family life. The panel will be followed by Dr. Drescher presenting a paper on his Clinical Work with Transgender Patients

Learning Objectives:

Objective #1: Demonstrate the importance of supportive and inclusive learning environments on a learner’s professional growth.

Objective #2: Incorporate understanding of the prevalence of gender dysphoria in clinical practice.

Objective #3: Analyze the role that personal experience plays in informing the clinician’s understanding of their patients and their approach to treatment.
