Speaker: Bindu Methikalam, Ph.D.

Description:

Traditional psychodynamic frameworks have historically been critiqued for relying on Eurocentric, universalist assumptions that pathologize or erase cultural differences. Modern relational and psychodynamic practices require a paradigm shift from rigid models of "cultural competence" toward a dynamic multicultural orientation (MCO). This interactive workshop discusses how psychodynamic clinicians can integrate pillars of cultural humility and cultural opportunities as essential mechanisms for deepening clinical outcomes and the working alliance. We will explore how these opportunities intersect with classic psychodynamic phenomena, transforming transference, countertransference, and relational interpretations into psychotherapy that is relevant for working with historically marginalized client populations. Through case vignettes, self-reflective exercises, and didactic, clinicians will leave with practical tools to identify intersecting identities, power and privilege, cross cultural-ruptures, and ways to improve treatment outcomes among historically marginalized client populations.

Learning Objectives:

Objective #1: Identify ways power and privilege impact therapeutic space.
Objective #2: Understand cultural enactments.
Objective #3: Identify aspects of Multicultural Orientation and Opportunities.
